“Wow, that’s cool, I’m really jealous.”
“Yeah, you look really jealous.”

The quarter-millionth visitor hit the 200 Nipples server last night! Woot!

We launched June 16th, so that’s 3,893 visits per day. (There were spikes of up to 31k/day; that’s an average.)

96 people are subscribed to this very blog and 1,107 people are subscribed to our new design reminder service that goes out 24 hours before a new design goes on sale. (Not to mention that we’ve sold and shipped a bunch of sweet shirts that are totally unique.)

Not too shabby at all. Thanks to Scott and Shandra for all your hard work. And thanks to all of you for following along, and writing about us and linking to us.

To celebrate, I’m extending the SUPPORT-IS-GO! (15% off product and shipping) coupon code to 09/31/08.

INK KC Covers 200Nipples

Posted by Wade | 08:05:2008 | Filed under: Press

A while ago I had an interview with KC INK Writer Sarah Benson. It was published in last week’s issue and has finally meandered it’s way to their online site.

When we heard about a new, local Web site called 200nipples.com, our imaginations ran wild: Porn site? Guide to medical oddities?

Turns out, 200nipples.com sells T-shirts designed by different Kansas City artists. Only 100 copies of each design are sold. After that, the design plate is destroyed, according to the site.

Each shirt design covers 200 nipples total. That’s barring customers with third nipples.

The shirts are priced on a sliding scale that’s gauged by scarcity. The first shirt sells for $1. The 100th shirt sells for $100. Every month there’s a new design.

The brother-and-sister team behind the site, Kansas City residents Wade Meredith, 27, and Shandra Chapman, 30, launched it July 1. Since then, 200nipples.com has sold shirts to people all over the world, from New Zealand to the United Kingdom to Kansas City.

Meredith said he hoped the site would give Kansas City artists and designers global attention. As for its racy name, Meredith said it’s all about catching the attention of “hipster designer” types. “You know, people who would appreciate something novel.”

But naming your site 200nipples.com has its downsides: “That name gets us banned from a lot of e-mail,” Meredith said.

We made it in their WTF section. (Probably appropriate, but not exactly flattering, in the traditional sense of the word ;-))

It Just Keeps Getting Better

Posted by Wade | 08:04:2008 | Filed under: Website Features

Scott and I did another round of feature-polish and debugging this weekend.

  • Fixed a cart bug that was giving certain OS/Web Browser combinations trouble.
  • When a shirt that is counting down hits zero, it now instantly reverts back to green instead of waiting for the whole page to hit the scheduled 5 minute refresh. (We also fixed the pointer/hand mouse-over issue when hovering over unclickable buttons.)
  • Site copy has been adjusted to make the buying experience more consistent from page to page as you move through the cart.
  • We added a contextual error message to let someone know what’s going on if they try to head back to the home page while they still have a shirt in their cart.

There’s more stuff in the works, but that’s it for now. You keep buying shirts and we’ll keep making this site better. If there are features you’d like to see, or something you think is confusing or not well laid out, let us know in the comments or via the contact page.

The “Younger Than McCain” t-shirt by Geoff Ponnath will be for sale on the home page starting at Midnight (12:00am US CST) August 1st.

“Hey, what’s your shirt mean?”
“It’s a collage of things that are younger than Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain. I’m stepping into history with this campaign t-shirt as America readies its oldest presidential candidate, ever. ”
“Wow, that’s cool, I’m really jealous.”
“Yeah, you look really jealous.”

The collage:

  • Frozen Waffles
  • McDonald’s
  • Alaska
  • Oral Contraceptives
  • The Discovery of DNA
  • Israel
  • Scrabble
  • The Hindenburg
  • Margaritas
  • The Slinky
  • Superman
  • The 6-Pack
  • SPAM
  • The US Postal Service’s Zip Code System
  • The Discovery of Plutonium
  • TV Dinners
  • Automatic Transmissions
  • The AARP
  • The CIA
  • The Shopping Cart
  • The Golden Gate Bridge
  • Duct Tape

First Shirts Are In!!!

Posted by Wade | 07:25:2008 | Filed under: General Announcement

We got our first shipment of shirts this morning and they look great! It took much longer to get this first batch in since we had to work out some kinks in our proof approval process and such. But we’ve got it down now and the “One Shirts” that were ordered during beta testing will go Monday!

All The Comments Fit To Print…

Posted by Wade | 07:11:2008 | Filed under: General Announcement

And, most assuredly, some that aren’t.

At the behest of a user, I’ve opened up comments on all blog posts. Enjoy…

(If there’s anything else you’d like, let us know we’ll try to deliver as long as I don’t have to open a vein or something.)

New Feature: The Gallery Is Live

Posted by Wade | 07:11:2008 | Filed under: Website Features

I built The Gallery section of the site last night. It will be the place to get all vital statistics, and pictures of, shirts that we have sold in the past. Right now it only contains our beta test shirt, but it will fill up as we keep moving along…

200Nipples is making some (small) waves out and about on the net. Check out some of the external stuff going on:

We’ve Got Comments!

Posted by Wade | 07:03:2008 | Filed under: General Announcement, Website Features

Oooooooh, look at how web 2.0 we are. We’ve got comments. We can have a community…

I’ve added some commenting to the blog, but only on the new design announcements. This is where discussions on each new design will take place. The first design announcement, and hence, the first place you can comment is here. Now, go make me some user generated content, so I can stop spending every free minute I have populating this site.

Oh, and in a brutal stroke of irony: At 7:37am on July 2nd, 2008, in The Power & Light District, downtown Kansas City, the stoplights aren’t working.

Launch: The First 24 Hours

Posted by Wade | 07:02:2008 | Filed under: Credit That's Due, Stats

24hrs

Welcome to what is now a very official seller of killer limited edition numbered t-shirts from $1-$100.

Welcome to 200nipples.com! ( <— That is the home page. This is the blog.)

Our beta test ended July 1st at 12:01am. 24 hours later, we’ve sold 26 shirts, received 9,000+ page loads, gained 5 RSS subscribers to this blog, and acquired 28 New Design Reminder subscribers.

As a bonus, I also got to chat with Seth Godin (A personal hero of mine) for a few minutes, because someone sent him a link to our site, and he wrote to let me know he thought it was a good idea. :-)

We also squashed 3 bugs in our shopping cart software and defeated a hacking attempt. It was friendly hacking, sort-of. They hacked us first, and notified us of the weakness later, only after we’d Rickrolled their IP address. We also made myriad improvements to the site’s layout, content, and graphic user interface. Almost all of the recent improvements are due to us putting our site in front of the the excellently critical community at Hacker News. You can read through the thread here, if you’re interested.

In fact, I was talking to Scott Connerly (our Javascript blackbelt) this morning and we both agreed that the next time we launch a project, that we’ll do a beta, then a Hacker News launch, followed by an official launch. That’s how insanely helpful that group of people is. If you’re building anything online, make sure you spend some time on that site. It does a <body> good.

The new shirt notification email failed to go out yesterday. The new design went on sale this morning. If you’re signed up on the new shirt notification email, it will hit your inbox tonight, when it should have gone out last night.

It was completely human error. (Mine, specifically.) I apologize; it will be on time from now on.

RIAA RIP

The RIAA RIP t-shirt by Ben Chlapek is now on sale at the home page.

“Hey, what’s your shirt mean?”
“It means that I think the world would be a better place if The RIAA, and their ilk, went ahead and passed into the great beyond.”
“Wow, that’s cool, I’m really jealous.”
“Yeah, you look really jealous.”

“One Shirt” Design Discussion

Posted by Wade | 06:25:2008 | Filed under: General Announcement

The “One Shirt” was sold to friends and family during the beta test. It is a number 1 made up of 100 t-shirts to commemorate our first design for sale on the site. It was designed by me.

All the other designs will have their own “New Shirt Reminder” post that will serve as a place to discuss the design. The “One Shirt” will never have such a post, so this will serve as place for discussion for the “One Shirt.”

Welcome: The 200 Nipples Blog

Welcome to the 200 Nipples Blog. It is the source for the latest news and events going on at 200Nipples.com: sellers of killer t-shirts from $1 to $100.

I’m Wade and I will be doing most of the writing on this blog. Stick around and I’ll keep you posted on new designs, whatever else is going on in our world, and how it may or may not affect you.

-Wade

You have two options if you’d like to receive a quick reminder the day before we have a new shirt go up on the site.

We’ve got an RSS feed just for that: 200 Nipples New Shirt Notice RSS Feed

Or you can sign up to get an email reminder.

The only thing you will receive, by subscribing here, is the day-before notice for the next shirt. Full blog subscriptions are available via the links on the right.

Thanks!

You want to be part of the magic, eh? Sweet. We want you to be part of it, too. Use our contact page to send us a link to your online portfolio, or Flickr account, or snail-mail us a hard copy of something you’ve done. Just provide us with a way to see your mad skills in illustration and design. If we’re pickin’ up what you’re puttin’ down, we’ll be in touch (You should provide us with a way to get in touch with you, as well.)

We are Kansas City based, so we’ll probably give preference to artists in KC, Lawrence or Columbia. We love it here, and we want to foster creativity ’round these parts. Having said that, if your sauce is hot enough, we’ll take you anyway.

We don’t expect you to give us free design work, but there’s more than a million ways to skin that cat, and we find different designers want different things anyway. (Glory, cash, beer.) So, we negotiate mutually satisfactory agreements with all of our designers, one on one. If you have a form, or an amount, of compensation in mind, tell us up front when you submit your stuff.

Good luck!
